Ceramic coating for extreme protection of steel structures
Do you need a coating for steel in Denmark that can resist corrosion , wear and aggressive chemicals? At Jakob Albertsen Komposit A/S, we work both on and offshore – and develop advanced ceramic coating systems that give steel structures a significantly longer lifespan. We often start where traditional surface treatments give up, and we are happy to invest in special equipment so that we can solve even the most demanding tasks in close collaboration with our customers and suppliers.
Ceramic coating is based on an advanced epoxy polymer technology, where the material is reinforced with ceramic particles of various shapes and sizes. The system was originally developed as a spin-off from the aerospace industry, where extreme durability and resistance are required. Today, the technology is widely used for coating steel that must withstand aggressive media, high temperatures and continuous mechanical stress.

Why choose ceramic coating for steel?
Ceramic coating is one of the most robust forms of surface protection for metal. It forms an extremely strong, chemically resistant and tight barrier that prevents corrosion, erosion and chemical attack – even at very high temperatures and in aggressive environments.
By coating steel you can achieve, among other things:
- significantly longer lifespan
- effective protection against chemicals, acids and salt water
- high wear resistance and resistance to particles and high-flow
- high resistance at high temperatures
- less need for expensive special alloys (e.g. Super Duplex)
Even ordinary carbon steel can achieve performance approaching high-alloy materials when properly coated with ceramic composite.

Areas of application for coating steel
Ceramic coatings are used in particular where the environment is too aggressive for traditional paint systems or epoxy coatings. The systems are particularly suitable for steel components in the process industry, marine environments, offshore installations and the energy and utilities sector.
Typical topics include:
- pumps and valves
- pipes, filters and containers
- heat exchangers and process parts
- tanks and storage systems
- steel structures, brackets and critical fittings
When all metal surfaces including O-ring grooves, packing surfaces and fits are coated, a complete barrier is achieved against media that would otherwise attack the steel.
Extreme technical features
Modern ceramic coatings are characterized by their high mechanical and chemical strength. An example is ARC 855, which is often used in saltwater environments and demanding applications.
Typical characteristics:
- compressive strength up to approximately 82 MPa
- tensile strength approx. 35 MPa
- hardness around 85 Shore D
- no solvents – environmentally friendly and approved for the working environment
- no underfilm corrosion
- strong adhesion of up to approximately 35 MPa
Layer thicknesses typically vary from 1 mm to 6 mm depending on requirements for wear resistance and chemical resistance.
Comparison with traditional steel solutions
A classic example is replacing expensive Super Duplex steel with ceramic-coated carbon steel. The ceramic coating provides better chemical resistance, higher temperature tolerance and longer service life – at a significantly lower total cost.
Benefits for you:
- large financial savings
- lower weight compared to solid alloys
- high resistance to erosion, corrosion and chemicals
- less maintenance and fewer downtimes
