Degradation of concrete and steel in the food industry

Food production is typically characterized by high hygiene standards. This places high demands on materials and their cleaning. Production facilities at food companies are typically cleaned internally using CIP systems (lye/acid/water). These systems remove residues of fat, carbohydrates and proteins and these are flushed into the sewer using clean water. This often places a strain on steel tanks, floors, structures and foundations, sewers, wells, tank farms and neutralization tanks, which slowly degrade. This can be prevented by applying a chemical resistant concrete coating to the new concrete or steel, or by renovating the already degraded concrete or steel.

Coating solutions for concrete and steel in the food industry

Jakob Albertsen has been delivering coating solutions to the food industry for a number of years. It started with the large neutralization tanks that collect wastewater from food companies before it is directed to the local wastewater treatment plant. Here, used concrete was built up with reinforced coating for filling, after which the repaired concrete was coated with chemical-resistant concrete coating. Later, wells, tank farms and floors were added. Floors inside the production area in particular can be advantageously protected with a chemical-resistant concrete top coating, as this is not affected in connection with CIP cleaning of production facilities. In addition, the chemical-resistant coating is easier to keep clean, which benefits hygiene requirements in the food industry.
