Corrosion protection of pipes

Corrosion protection of pipes

Piping systems are used in a wide range of industrial, maritime and infrastructure applications, where they are often exposed to aggressive corrosive environments. Without effective corrosion protection, pipes can be weakened by electrochemical, chemical and mechanical stress, which can lead to leaks, downtime and expensive repairs.

Corrosion risks in piping systems

Pipes are exposed to corrosion both externally and internally, depending on their operating environment:

  • External corrosion:
  • Atmospheric impact from humidity, temperature fluctuations and air pollution.
  • Contact with aggressive media in soil or water (e.g. chemical processes, salt water or high humidity environments).
  • Galvanic corrosion when pipes are in contact with more precious metals.
  • Internal corrosion:
  • Flow of aggressive liquids or gases that degrade the inner pipe wall.
  • Presence of acidic, alkaline or chloride-containing liquids.

Erosion corrosion due to high flow velocity, particles and turbulence in the fluid.

To extend the life of piping systems, a combination of coatings, cathodic protection and material selection is required.

Methods for corrosion protection of pipes

1. External protection: Surface treatment and coatings

To protect piping systems from external corrosion, the following methods are used:

  • Epoxy-based coatings (FBE – Fusion Bonded Epoxy)
  • High mechanical strength and chemical resistance.
  • Typically used in the oil and gas industry and district heating pipelines.
  • Polyurethane and polyethylene coatings (3LPE/3LPP)
  • Multi-layer coating with polyethylene/polypropylene outer layer for protection against mechanical wear.
  • Ideal for buried pipes and marine applications.
  • Traditional corrosion protection systems for water and drain pipes.
  • Galvanizing (hot-dip galvanizing)
  • Effective against atmospheric corrosion, but may be limited in chemical environments.
  • Thermally sprayed aluminum or zinc (TSZ/TSA)
  • Used for pipes in marine environments or offshore installations.

2. Internal protection: Coatings and inhibitors

To prevent internal corrosion, the pipes can be coated with:

  • Epoxy, mineral or glass reinforced coatings
  • Creates a chemically resistant barrier against aggressive liquids.
  • Used in drinking water pipes, oil and gas transportation and the process industry.
  • Corrosion inhibitors
  • Add the liquid into the pipes to neutralize corrosion-causing elements.

3. Cathodic protection of pipes

Piping systems in soil, saltwater or chemical environments often require cathodic protection (CP) to prevent electrolytic corrosion:

  • Galvanic sacrificial anodes (zinc, magnesium or aluminum) are used on piping systems in marine environments.
  • Impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) is used for long underground pipelines where an external current source prevents corrosion.

ISO standards for corrosion protection of pipes

To ensure long-term durability of piping systems, international standards are followed, including:

  • ISO 21809 – Protective coatings for pipelines in the oil and gas industry.
  • ISO 12944 – Corrosion protection of steel structures, including pipes, in industrial environments.
  • ISO 15589 – Cathodic protection of pipelines in soil and water.
